Advice For the Gym Novice
If you are new to the gym, chances are that you're concerned about fitting in. A great feature about MyFitnessTrainer.com is that there is no gym membership required. However, if you are ready to give a public fitness facility a try, here is some useful advice to the novice:
- Don't be afraid to take the time to read the instructions on the equipment. When I was new to strength training, I didn't even know that the machines had instructions on them. Later I was too embarrassed to read the instructions for fear of looking like I didn't know what I was doing. This is silly because even experienced weightlifters read the instructions on a machine before using it. It is dangerous to use a machine incorrectly.
- Don't forget to adjust the strength machines to fit your body. Personally, I'm a big fan of dumbbells because they fit everyone and allow for correct form, but machines can be great if they are adjusted properly. If an exercise feels awkward or uncomfortable, verify that the machine is set to fit you.
- Don't exercise in flip flops or jeans. Wear clothes that will keep you cool and allow for free movement. Avoid revealing workout clothes.
- Don't strike up a conversation with someone wearing headphones. Headphones are a sign that someone would like to work out in peace. If you do end up in a conversation with someone who is strength training, make sure to allow for pauses in the conversation so that s/he can do the next set on time. Conversations during cardio exercise are generally more acceptable, but be sure to take the hint if someone is giving you short, one-word replies.
- Bring a towel and wipe your sweat off of the machine or bench before moving on. No one wants to sit in your pile of sweat.
- Use slow, controlled movements. If you need to swing your whole body to lift a dumbbell, chances are you're using too much weight.
- Use the right amount of weight for you- don't try to keep up with the experienced lifters. Start light and work your way up to the heavy weights.
If you follow these simple recommendations, you will fit in great and feel right at home in the public gym. You'll just wish that everyone in the gym would learn the same gym etiquette.
