5 Reasons To Start A Cardio Habit This Summer

I will confess to you that I am not a big fan of treadmills.  I would way rather be outside enjoying the fresh air, the sounds of birds and the light breeze.  In fact, my favorite kinds of exercise don't feel like exercise at all.  That's why summer is my favorite season.  In the summer, it's easy to get great cardiovascular exercise while having fun with friends and family.

Sports like basketball, tennis, volleyball, and swimming can really get your heart rate up and burn a lot of calories.  In fact, your metabolism will stay in a boosted state for 3-4 hours after that tennis match or game of basketball.  Soon, your body begins to expect these higher levels of activity and burn more fat as fuel.

Now is the time to take advantage of good weather and good friends.  Here are five reasons why you should increase your activity this summer:

1. You'll hardly notice that you're exercising.  Your mind will be so focused on the game, or the beautiful weather or scenery that it won't occur to you that you're "working."  On the contrary, you'll be playing your way to better fitness.

2. You'll be more motivated than ever to do your yard work this summer.  That's because the final goal will not only be a prettier flowerbed, but toned arms and legs.  I love to accomplish two things at once, don't you?

3. You can take in some vitamin D.  Take in some soothing sunny rays, and you'll be increasing your body's vitamin D intake.  As long as you remember the sunscreen, you can also enjoy a suntan.

4. You'll naturally eat less.  In case you haven't noticed, there are a lot fewer junk food temptations outside in the fresh air than there are in your kitchen or in front of your TV.

5. You can have a lot of fun with your family and friends.  If you have kids, you can help them to develop healthy activity levels while they enjoy quality time with you.

So get outside in that fresh air with your family or friends, and have fun!
