Homemade Whole Wheat Tortillas
Need a simple and delicious snack or meal idea for the summer? How about a healthy wrap or fajitas made with a homemade whole wheat tortilla? Regular white flour tortillas can be high calorie and offer little in the way of nutrition. Whole wheat tortillas can be a smart alternative. You may even find some higher-fiber versions in your grocery store- these can make you feel full faster.
Better yet, you could make your own homemade whole wheat tortillas. In my opinion, these taste tons better than the store-bought versions. In fact, now that I've been spoiled with the homemade tortillas, I don't think I could ever go back.
You can buy whole wheat four in a health food store, and lately it's showing up in more and more regular grocery stores. If you really start to love whole wheat flour, you can even grind your own. Hand grinders and more expensive electrical grinding machines are available online or in cooking stores. Fresh ground whole wheat is the best!
Here is a simple whole wheat tortilla recipe:
2 cups flour (whole grain flour-fresh ground or from the freezer) ¼ teaspoon baking powder 1 ½ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon Canola oil
Mix well with hands. Add: 1/3 cup hot water, and then slowly add more water as needed while mixing with hands. Dough should not be too dry or too wet to roll out. It will be much easier to roll out if you use a Roulpat (a silicone mat) under it. A nonstick rolling pin or a rolling pin with Pam on it helps a lot. (Better still, put a piece of parchment paper on top of the dough ball, and roll it out like that.) Make seven round balls and roll out thin. If a perfectly round shape is desired, cut them with a knife or scissors before cooking. Cook on hot griddle/skillet, 10-15 seconds on each side. Total recipe:
