Don't Let Flu Season Stall Your Fitness Goals
Last flu season, it seemed to me that there was more going around than usual. Even clients who had had flu shots were getting sick a lot during the winter.
This year H1N1 (swine flu) will be added to the mix.
Getting sick messes up your meal plan, can cause muscle loss, and certainly doesn't encourage powerful workouts. So, how can you stay as possible?
Here are some tips from the experts in flu season safety:
- Get extra sleep. At the very least, get 8 hours per night. Weightlifters tend to need a little extra. Sleep heals muscles and fights off illness by boosting your immune system.
- Take a multivitamin. Also, Dr. Oz recommends vitamin D supplements in the winter time, when you don't get as much sun.
- Wash your hands often. This seems obvious, but it's probably the most effective thing you can do to avoid viruses. I carry some disinfectant gel in my purse to "wash" after opening public doors and pushing shopping carts.
- Sneeze and cough on your sleeve instead of your hand. This is a courtesy to those around you, because your hand can spread germs to everything you touch.
- Eat plenty of whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
Remember that if you're in bed with a virus, you're missing your workouts. Take these steps to keep in the action and continue to reach your fitness goals.
