3 Tips For Better Food Journaling
If the mere thought of keeping a food journal causes your brain to shut down, don't give up. Keeping a food journal is easy if you just follow these 3 simple tips:
1. Pay attention to portion sizes.
Always check if something you are about to eat contains more than one serving. Once a client told me that she saw a frosted sugar cookie in the grocery store that she really wanted. It said "300 calories per serving," which was a splurge, but may have been worth it to her. She knew for sure the cookie was a bad idea when she saw that it contained 3 servings. That meant that the cookie had 900 calories in it- more than half a day's worth of calories!
2. Record as you go.
If at all possible, record your calories and fiber during the day as you eat them. This is much more effective because you will always know how many calories are left in your daily allotment. Also, it will be easier to stay focused on your goal and keep that feeling of accountability.
If you aren't near a computer during the day, consider keeping a small notebook with you to jot down calorie and fiber totals as they add up. Then you can simply enter your totals in the computer at the end of the day. (On your daily foods page, remember to check the little box that allows you to manually enter totals. If you forget this step, your entry may not be recorded accurately.)
3. Record the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Your body will record everything you eat, whether you do or not. Commit to yourself right now that you will write down everything you eat, and record all of the good days, and the bad days. You may think that it's too late once you've started to over eat, but recording your calories (no matter how many) always helps you to rein it in.
