Points For Activity
You, like everyone else, are limited each day by time. Some people have more time on their hands than others, but I think that the desire for more hours in the day is pretty universal. If you had all of the time in the world, you probably would never have any trouble fitting a workout in. Instead, you have to prioritize tasks every day. The activity points technique is basically the adult equivalent of giving a child a sticker when s/he does a chore. It is a motivator to encourage daily physical activity. Here's how it works: The goal is to get 10 points per day. Simply keep score on a pad of paper near your desk or on the fridge. The following activities are worth the following number of points: Strength training workout: 6 points Cardio workout (at least 20 minutes at Target Heart Rate): 6 points Taking the kids or the dog on a relaxed walk: 4 points One hour of physical labor (housecleaning, yardwork, etc): 3 points Ten minutes of slow, steady stretching: 1 point Parking in the farthest parking spot and taking the stairs all day: 1 point Playing with kids or pets for at least 15 minutes (moving as much as they do): 1 point Taking a nap (in bed without the TV or a book): 2 points 30 crunches: 1 point So, if you're a list-making, point-winning type, give it a try. It's nice to get "credit" for your efforts. Of course, after a month of these activity levels, you can expect another reward, too: the "keg" on your stomach will start to look more like a six pack!
