Working Out with Kids

If you have trouble finding the time to work out because of small children, you'll find this page helpful.  There are many ways to get your exercise in and make your kids happy all at once.  In fact, you will be setting a great example, teaching them that exercise is fun!

Here are some tips for exercising with kids:

  • Use your kids as your weights.  Do squats while holding your baby, or play the "airplane" game by chest pressing your toddler.  They can sit on your back while you do pushups (knee or full pushups.)  You can do bent-over row, holding them instead of a band or weight.  Use your imagination, and you'll see that you can have fun together while strength training.
  • Most kids love going on a walk.  For smaller children, you can put them in a stroller or on a front or backpack.  You'll get an even better workout because of the added effort needed to push them.  For bigger kids, let them bike alongside you as you walk or run.  Another fun solution is a bike seat or a bike trailer.  You will get the added workout from pulling their weight, and they will love it.
  • Rainy day cardio?  Try playing tag with small toddlers.  Go on your hands and knees or into a squat position and run like that to make it more challenging.  Make sure to laugh a lot- that'll get your heart rate up even higher.
  • Have a dance party.  Kids love to dance and be silly.  They often like dance exercise videos, and you may find that you also like their dance videos!

Most importantly, have fun!
