Tips for New Year's Resolution Success in 2008

It doesn't matter how many times you've tried to lose weight before- this year can be different.  You can lose weight whenever you decide to, so decide to start now.  You can be a new you in 2008!

Here are some simple tips to remember.  Applying any of these will increase your weight loss success, and applying all of them will practically guarantee the results you're looking for.

  1. Eat 20-30 grams of fiber every day.  Make the fiber come from natural sources (not supplements and pills) such as apples, broccoli, whole grains and beans.  Remember that fiber only comes from plant sources.
  2. After 7 pm, you can eat all you want- as long as it's veggies!  Try a large plate of steamed vegetables as a late night snack.  You'll sleep better and you won't crave junk.
  3. Drink like a fish.  (That means lots of water!)  Try to drink 10+ glasses per day.  Remember that if you're never thirsty, it means you're probably not drinking enough.
  4. Count calories.  Sorry, but it's just a fact of life.  You will have more control over your weight loss goal if you keep track of how much you're eating.  Calories in vs. calories out is the rule, and the goal is to eat fewer calories than you burn.  You can get a personalized calorie goal from your MyFitnessTrainer.com program.  Check the goal frequently because it will change to adapt to your changing metabolism.
  5. Give your heart a beating.  Anything that gets your heart rate up for 20 minutes a day will do the trick, so if you're not into dance aerobics, maybe you'd rather play tennis or even Wii.

Damage your muscles.  (I know, this is starting to sound kind of violent, isn't it?  First, we're giving the heart a beating and now we're damaging muscles.  Don't worry, it's really not a "no pain, no gain" story after all.  Really, it doesn't have to hurt...)  Just work your muscles a little harder than they are comfortable with each time you strength train.  This can be done by slightly upping the weight each time you weight lift.  You only have to work each muscle once a week to cause the microscopic tears that rebuild as you rest, burning fat and calories.
  7. Get support.  Studies have shown that your chances of weight loss success in 2008 are much better if you work with a friend.  Find an exercise buddy, or just hang out on the MyFitnessTrainer.com forum for encouragement and tips.
